Punk Hair Color!

Hello,

Today I want to talk about punk hair color. A new trend for the people who are under a certain age,

but an old one for everyone else who was here during the punk era in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

In those days it was mostly only worn by people who were in this movement.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punk_subculture

Today it is so popular and accepted by everyone. Not only is it

more common, it is also a lot easier to achieve bright long lasting unnatural colors. The cosmetics

industry has come so far in terms of direct dyes. Lately I have had everyone from children to  mature

adults ask me for these bright beautiful colors. Here are some of the examples of my most recent

work.

One of the people who was a big influence in this trend is the model Chloe Norgaard. This beautiful

model couldn't get any gigs because her hair was always crazy colors. But now they seek her out

because her hair is so unique! She made it so the bright colors seem normal. Pretty cool!

So if you want to add something fun to your style, go for it! There is no better time then now. Yo can

start by adding a small piece and working your courage up to something more bold. I did! Have fun.

It is Wedding and Prom Season!

Today, I want to talk about Up-Dos and all of the changes I have seen in terms of fashion for formal hair dos.
As a woman, I think its safe to say that we like to dress up once and a while, and part of dressing up is, of course, getting our hair done up.Since these formal hair-dos (called "Up-Dos") are very elaborate, we get them done on rare and special occasions: think prom, weddings, award shows....
Ever since I started my career doing hair, up-dos have been one of my favorite services to provide. Usually, I am one of the only people, if not the only person, to provide this service at every salon where I have worked. This is because proper Up-Dos are very elaborate and not as common as other services, so not that many hair stylists know how to do them. If you happen to find someone who can do Up-Dos (and is good at them), don't lose track of them. I have heard so many horror stories of bad wedding hair, all of them terrifying. Imagine one of the most special days of your life: full of family, friends, and pictures... and your hair looks awful. Aaaaah!
It used to be that Up-Dos consisted of very placed and perfect hair. That is no longer in style. Women nowadays prefer a more loose and less formal look for their special day. When choosing a hairstyle think about your event:- Is it formal?- Does it have a theme? - Can you get away with a vintage look, or should it be modern?
Checklist for your Up-Do appointment:
1. Make a hair trial appointment (before the day of the event), just to make sure you and the hairdresser are on the same track.
2. Bring pictures or magazine clippings to your appointment.
3. Make sure you also bring in any accessories you might want to wear.
4. Don't wash your hair the day of the trial or event, hair cooperates better when it is not fly-away and has a little oil in it.
5. Wear a button down shirt or a shirt with a big enough collar that you can take it off without ruining your hair.
6. If it is the day of your trial, take pictures of your hair with your dress.

Remember: just because it's called "formal" hair, doesn't mean it can't be fun!

Are you ready for the Ombre?

So, our hair survived the winter and the dry and itchy scalp (and maybe some embarrassing situations)...Yay!

The sun is out, so it is time to re-think hair color for the spring time. The Ombre fad also survived the winter and it is more popular then ever, so if you have been thinking about getting this trendy look, go for it!

Why it is easy to wear:
- The roots are darker, so you don't have to worry about rushing to the hairdresser for a re-touch.
- Since the top is darker, it often looks more flattering if you are originally a brunette.

Here are just two examples of many of the possibilities:

So, if you are feeling bold, or just ready for something fun, try this great look!If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Going Darker This Fall?

Hey Everyone the fall is officially here!
The weather is still pretty hot but every time I go shopping I get reminded the holidays are just around the corner.
So since the evenings are going to get a little chilly and we are going to start wearing our scarves, it's also a great time to make our hair color a little darker. The general rule is lighter in the spring and darker in the fall.
My recommendation is to go in and have your stylist put a semi or Demi permanent hair color on your hair, this will serve different purpose:
-Deep, rich darker tones for the fall.
- it will add a lot of shine and make your hair look healthier and more beautiful for all those holiday parties you will be attending.
- it isn't permanent, which means it will be easy to go light again in the spring :)
I hope everyone has a fun time trying out new darker shades of hair color this fall.
Some of my favorites are a dark caramel colors or a pretty wine color.

I hope this was helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions.

No More Brazilian Blowouts!

Hello all,

After months of controversy about the Brazilian Blowout/keratin-based straightening system, I have decided to stop using and applying it. Last Fall, the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration ('OROSHA' http://www.orosha.org/ in the State of Oregon conducted many tests to see if this product was safe, primarily focused on testing levels of formaldehyde in the product. They found that the levels were anywhere from 6.8-11.8, which is a lot higher than the recommended 0.2 or less.

After the tests, OROSHA issued a statewide hazard alert warning to salons:

Before the test, the Brazilian Blowout company had sent word to those of us using their products that the Brazilian Blowout was formaldehyde-free and, after the tests, they sent each one of their clients a letter that stated that the OROSHA test's results proved that the levels in the product were safe.

Yesterday I found out that the State of California is suing the Brazilian Blowout Company, alleging that it sold its solution based on false claims that it is safe and formaldehyde-free.

So, after months of back and forth, I have decided to stop offering the service, just to be on the safe side. My clientele's well-being always comes before everything else, and that's something I won't take chances with.

Feather Extensions!

Hello Again.

Today I am going to talk about this crazy frenzy that everyone is caught up in, lately: feather extensions. They are everywhere, these days! Feather extensions are a great way to add color and whimsy to your hair. They're an accessory that we haven't seen since the 1970's. They are put in just like hair extensions with a little metal clip that does not damage the hair. They're easy to put in and easy to remove. If you are careful with them, they can last up to three months.

At first I was hesitant, but they look super cute... so I gave in :)

Feather extensions are great because they can be washed, curled and straightened to match whatever hairdo you desire. Tons of people are rocking them.

They are so popular that it is driving the price up for everyone, including fly fishermen:

Of course, you might point out that this is a fad that won't last long... but we believe in celebrating the present, so we decided to have an event at our salon to celebrate and get together

Feather Extension Extravaganza!

June 24th 4-7PM
Only $15 per extension, a 40% discount.

We will have Complimentary refreshments. Please come join us!

Since it is a special occasion, we will not be taking any appointments for this event. First come, first serve... Hope to see you guys there!

The Brazilian Blowout!

Hello, it's been a while since my last post because Thanksgiving and other stuff happened. But I'm back.

Today, I am going to talk about the Brazilian Blowout or the "keratin treatment". There is tons of info on the web that is there precisely to sell you on the service, but today I will talk about the negatives and positives without trying to convince you to come in and get the service.

First of all, What is a Brazilian Blowout or keratin treatment?

The Brazilian Blowout or keratin treatment is a hair treatment designed to make your hair more manageable and get rid of frizz. Sounds great right? What woman doesn't want to get rid of frizz? I can't think of one.

The treatment takes about an hour and a half at the salon and it lasts up to 12 weeks depending on the person. It slowly rinses out of the hair, so the person isn't left with curly roots and straight ends like what one would get with a regular straightening service. The cost is anywhere between $150 to $450 depending on the salon and the length of the hair.

It all sounds great and there were a lot of hairdressers making a lot of money, and a lot of clients looking great until a hair salon decided to sue one of the biggest companies that provided this treatment. The claim was that the chemicals in the product where hazardous to one's health, and that the company placed false statements on their packaging concerning the quantities of the chemicals. After several studies, the keratin treatment company won the case.

The concern was that the product contained high amounts of formaldehyde. According to merriam-webster.com:

Formaldehyde : is a colorless pungent irritating gas CH2O used chiefly in aqueous solution as a disinfectant and preservative and in chemical synthesis.

I did some research and it looks like all of these hair treatments must contain some form of this chemical to work.

So after all of this what do I think? I use chemicals in my line of work every day. It's just part of the cosmetology industry. Everything I use has chemicals, so I leave it up to the FDA to make sure that these products are safe to use, and then I use them. Like everything else, I have the common sense to use things in moderation, and when it comes to the Brazilian Blowout, I do it in moderation. I make sure the salon is well-ventilated when I perform it. The smell is somewhat irritating, so I don't do more than one per day. As for the clients, if they decide to start getting these treatments they only have to do it a maximum of four times a year. Do I recommend it to everyone? Absolutely not.

You shouldn't get it done if:
  • your hair is thin
  • you can't afford it
  • you are sensitive to smells
  • you like to wear your hair naturally curly sometimes
You should get it done if
  • you have frizzy hair
  • you have thick hair
  • you like to wear your hair straight most of the time
  • you can afford it
So, in conclusion, I will leave it to everyone's discretion.

This is not a miracle service that will make it so one can get out of bed and have perfect hair. That does not exist. One has to work a little to have manageable hair. Like most new things in the beauty industry, I always try it on myself before I try it on my clients, and I can tell you from personal experience that It definitely helped me every morning by cutting down on the time I had to spend on my hair. That does not mean it will help or work on everyone else.

So that's it. No miracle formula yet :)

If anyone has additional questions feel free to ask. I will be brutally honest.

Till next time!

Hair Spray

No, we are not going to talk about the musical/movie, but the actual product. I choose this particular topic because Halloween has just passed and I found myself using it a LOT.

Hair spray, according to Wikipedia: "(also hair lacquer, spritz, or sticky water) is a common cosmetic product that is sprayed onto hair to keep it stiff or in a certain style. The spray can be dispensed from a pump or aerosol spraynozzle."

"It is sprayed to hold styles for a long period. It may leave hair feeling "crunchy" unless brushed out. Excessive use or lack of washing after hair spray may lead to dull or damaged hair and dandruff."

"Hair spray was first developed and manufactured in 1948 by Chase Products Company, based in BroadviewIllinois."

To me, it was an essential part of my morning routine to make those
"beautiful" wavy bangs stand straight up and stay there all day.

Below are two of the Mexican actresses I wanted to look like as a kid.

I had to carry a small bottle of it in my purse because I had swim class or PE and God forbid my hair was flat for the next period. What was that product called? Oh yes, Aqua Net (I used the one with the white bottle because it had the strong hold).

In high school, I took it to next level and had an empty can to use as a roller, because the circumference was the ideal size. I would put the can of Aqua Net under my bangs and I would spray them with another can. My bangs were so long, they would go down to the tip of my mouth. No, I could not see, but I looked cool, or so I thought.

Today, hair spray has improved. It's still sticky, still smells funny and it's still extremely flammable, but some of its ingredients have changed, so we don't make the hole in the ozone any bigger. Our hairstyles have thankfully changed to more natural looks that make hair spray optional and not a must.

I do a lot of bridal and period-piece hair, so I use it on my clients a lot more than a non-hairdresser would use it on themselves. I am interested in hearing how it was used in generations before me, like in the 60's. I want to know how long it took those women to get those perfect do's. If any reader has some insights or interesting stories,
please feel free to share them with me

Below are pictures of two actresses from the show Mad Men, which is based in the 1960's.

Look good... feel better.

The subject for today is Cancer. Although it is not a happy subject the program I will write about is fantastic. After doing hair for many, many years I have decided to give back. And who is more deserving and needs it more than cancer patients? No one.
The Program is called "Look Good Feel Better" This program is a part of the American Cancer society and it aids women who are going through chemotherapy and are facing side effects.  I am very exited to start. As a volunteer I can help women feel better by teaching them how to apply  make up and do their hair. If you are a licensed Cosmetologist or aesthetician and you are interested in volunteering, or if you are a cancer patient who might think this is a program that can help you, please go to the following link.

How I heard about it.
I read a fantastic article about a hair dresser who helped a lady in need. If you guys want to read this heartwarming story here it is.
